When we talk about Christian mission, we often think immediately of “going to the field”, “becoming a foreign missionary”, or “joining projects in distant countries”. Though, this perspective is limited. Mission does not belong to the church or to missionaries; mission belongs to God (Missio Dei) and we are invited to take part in it.
The concept of Missio Dei helps us understand that God was already at work in the world long before the church existed, seeking to restore humanity. The church did not invent mission; it was invited to join the mission God had already begun. In Lausanne, for instance, one of the principles is that Christ sends His people into the world just as the Father sent the Son. Therefore, your role in the body of Christ is not secondary – it is essential.
Mission happens through every member of the church.
Not every calling will be to a “foreign field”. Some will be called to pray, others to mobilize, support, donate time and finances, dream up strategies, or live out mission in everyday life – at work, among family, and in the neighborhood.
Questions to reflect on:
• In what areas are you already living out mission, even without realizing it?
• What gifts has God given you that can serve His mission?
• Which cause, people, or culture stirs compassion in you?
Ways to engage in mission:
• Pray regularly for unreached people groups, missionaries and projects.
• Support through resources – financial, material, or partnerships.
• Mobilize people in your church, small groups or circle of friends.
• Serve locally in mission projects, churches, or cross-cultural ministries.
• Go, when God calls – whether for a short or a long period.
Practical steps to start:
- Establish a devotional time focused on mission – study people-group maps, read about different cultures, and reflect on Scripture with a missionary mindset.
- Connect with a reliable mission agency or organization – this helps you serve with direction and safety.
- Take part in trainings and courses on missiology, culture, language, and intercultural communication.
- Become a communicator of the mission – share about unreached people groups, raise awareness in your church, and use social media to inspire others.
- Start small – use your vacation time to serve, get involved in local mission projects, or join short-term trips.
- Cultivate perseverance – mission is a long-term journey that requires faith, patience, and commitment.
